Nitrates in our Drinking Water by P. Skolarus

Large amounts of nitrate in water may cause serious illness in infants under six months of age. It may also cause illness in adults after prolonged use.

Recent well water statistics received from the Livingston County Health Department indicate that there are several problem areas within our community (please refer to the enclosed map). Our purpose is not to alarm our residents, however there is a need to keep you informed.

We would encourage your participation in a study to determine the extent, if any, of nitrate contamination in your individual well. Residents may pick up a well water sampling kit at the Township, follow the easy directions and then return the sample to the Township Hall. It will be set to the State for analysis. The fee for the automated partial chemistry test, which includes nitrate is $8.00.

The township wide results of this study will be provided in the next newsletter. Please see other related articles in this Newsletter regarding the causes for Nitrate contamination.
